"HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles" (hondasfordsvolvo)

I think we’ve well established that many of us don’t have a “favorite car”
. However I do have a favorite type of car. A liftback. Chances are if a car can be described as a lift back I’m going to be into it. Bonus points for having pop ups, and/or an in-line engine.
Just a few examples.

Okay, but what about cars that are styled like liftbacks but just have a tiny, hilarious trunk lid ?
And what about liftbacks that don’t have a C-pillar, but more of a C-abutment or C-fortification?
Because that’s my jam. Well, one of them.

Fastbacks that aren’t liftbacks are an insult to the consumer’s intelligence. Like a shitty pop song. Corporate ass hole telling us we like it, when really it’s garbage.

I was actually going to post a 1g because I like them more, but I didn’t want all 80s stuff, and while the 1g isn’t technically an 80s car, it sure does look like one.

I loooove that little Dastun. Altho I prefer the next generation that got more glass.

Liftbacks are why sedans don’t make much sense to me. Why have a tiny trunk opening when you can have the glass lift for a massive opening?

Yes. That’s why I put the Mondeo liftback on here.
Oh God I just realized that all the crossover coupes are technically liftbacks. Okay -100 points if it can also be described as a crossover.

I had a BMW 318ti all through college, and I was always amazed at just how much shit I could cram into the back of it with the seats folded down.
I miss that car...

Audi Quattro comes to mind here. Looks like a sensible European hatchback, right? Should be like a big Scirocco! Haha, no. Let’s put a 26 gallon gas tank over the rear axle, where the 80/4000 sedan’s trunk was, and a spare tire next to it. It’s only about a foot deep. I mean, the car had other virtues, but I always hated this about it while I had one.

I think I can excuse them, given late ‘60s-early ‘70s arguably not all the bugs had been worked out of the “metal tail, glass top” more sort of modern style. You really need good gas shocks to support more than just a piece of glass, particularly if it’s like 5' long.
This:
Is a pretty different kind of thing to what would have been needed on that Marlin.

Also worth mention: loading a liftback space from the front seat area was normal enough that Kaiser thought they could get by with no access at all.
They were wrong, and had to add a trunk lid, but the fact that they made it to production thinking that says something.

It’s funny that it’s modern enough to have gas shocks and thereby *could* have had big enough gas shocks to support a big lid and not had to rely on torsion trunk springs - i.e. the reason for the Mustang and Marlin being that way. But no.

The Ma zda 6 had a liftback option in the mid-2000s, too. If the Mazdaspeed trim had that feature and was well cared- for , I’d be all over it.

I never understood why an identical bodystyle came in both liftback and sedan though.

That’s what the parcel shelf panel is for. Every hatch I have ever owned has had a removable panel that hangs from the hatch to hide what stuff you may have in the trunk. That or a retractable cover like Subarus use.

I had a first generation RX7 as well as a few others, the great sports car lines and surprisingly practical. My disappointment with the BRZ wasn't lack of power, it was lack of a hatch, which knocked it off from consideration as a daily driver.

I didn’t want to have too many pictures because kinja doesn’t like that. The list is a lot longer than the few I posted.
Rx7, CRX, Fox Body Capri, and 928, all the Z cars , 3rd and 4th gen F bodies, Chevy Nova hatchback (when they were still RWD), Chevy Monza, AMC pacer, AE86, e36, and e46 compact
Soo many good cars

My cousin almost bought one, but it had the Ford V6. And it was Mazda rusty.
It was a terrible car

Wager it’s because many Americans are fearful of hatchbacks of any kind. So they kept a sedan in there to make people happy.
